Experimental Galveston Bay/Houston Ship Channel Nowcasting/Forecasting System

The nowcast and forecast cycles are evaluated on a semi-annual basis and formal statistics are computed for water levels, principal component direction current strength at prediction depth (4.7m), near surface temperature, and near surface salinity based on the following measures:

1. RMS == root mean square error
2. WILLMOTT RE == Willmott dimensionless relative error
3. BIAS == Bias
4. GAIN == Gain
5. CC == Correlation coefficient
6. STD ERROR == Standard Error
7. CF == Central frequency (at reference levels: 15 cm, 26 cm/s, 2 deg C, 2 PSU; at time reference: 15 min)
8. NOF == Negative outlier frequency (at reference levels: 15 cm, 26 cm/s; at time reference: 15 min)
9. POF == Positive outlier frequency (at reference levels: 15 cm, 26 cm/s; at time reference: 15 min)
10. MDPO == Maximum duration in hours of positive outlier (at reference levels: 30 cm, 52 cm/s)
11. MDNO == Maximum duration in hours of negative outlier (at reference levels: 30 cm, 52 cm/s)
12. WOF == Worst case outlier frequency (at reference levels 30 cm, 52 cm/s)
    Defined as the frequency of occurrence of when the difference between the observations and model exceed the reference levels and the astronomic prediction iscloser to the observation than the model prediction.
13. BOF == Best case outlier frequency (at reference levels: 5 cm, 26 cm/s)
    Defined as the frequency of occurrence of when the difference between the observations and astronomic prediction exceed the reference levels and the model prediction is closer to the observation than the astronomic prediction.
