Office of Coast SurveyNautical Data Branch

USACE, Portland District, Hydrographic Survey
USACE, Portland District, Hydrographic Survey
(One of more than 60 different sources of nautical data)
The Nautical Data Branch (NDB) is responsible for collecting and managing all the mapping and charting data used in the construction of nautical charts. This data, known as "source", has a wide variety of origins. Some of which include the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the United States Coast Guard (USCG), the United States Navy (USN), and anyone who has an interest in safe and efficient navigation.

It is the mission of the NDB to critically evaluate all incoming data for applicability to nautical charts. The branch typically receives approximately 25,000 documents per year. Of these about 5,000 actually contain data that is worthy of charting. But they must all be carefully examined to make certain that all applicable information is processed.

The Nautical Data Branch serves as the primary point of contact for originators of nautical information. If you need to contact us, please Click Here for NOAA's Nautical Chart Product Inquiry page, or Here for NOAA's Nautical Chart Product Comment page.

In addition the Branch manages an extensive archive. The archive contains items such as; source documents applied, chart histories, nautical charting products produced for use in cartographic research and reference libraries of associated marine information
