
Captain Dave MacFarland, NOAA
Director, Office of Coast Survey
Before being selected as Director of the Office of Coast Survey, Dave MacFarland has served as Chief, Marine Chart Division since April 1994, after serving as the Commanding Officer of the NOAA Ship MT MITCHELL, one of the largest hydrographic survey vessels in the NOAA fleet. Previous to this assignment, Dave has served in land assignments on the east and west coasts: as a staff officer within the Marine Data Systems Project, Hydrographic Training Officer, Chief of the Atlantic Hydrographic Surveys Branch, Coast and Geodetic Survey (C&GS) Liaison with Defense Mapping Agency, and Chief of the C&GS Plans and Management Group.
Captain MacFarland received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology from Michigan Technological University in 1970, and a Master of Science Degree in Technology Management from the University of Maryland in 1992.
